Description: Mount Maunganui is a town in the Bay of Plenty, located on a peninsula to the north of Tauranga. The town is located on top of a sand bar that connects Mauao to the mainland. Mauao, also known as Mount Maunganui or The Mount, is an extinct volcanic cone (252m high) at the end of the peninsula. The residents of Mount Maunganui are lucky enough to have both a harbour beach (Pilot Bay on the right of the picture) and an ocean beach with great surf, within a short distance. The town is a well known holiday spot over the xmas and summer months.
