Cape Jackson, Queen Charlotte Wilderness Park, New Zealand

Cape Jackson, Queen Charlotte Wilderness Park, New Zealand

Description: View of old lighthouse beacon. It is situated in the open ocean off Cape Jackson, set on a small platform of rock. A new light was erected in 2001 on the mainland at Cape Jackson, but this lighthouse remains in service.
On Cape Jackson - an isolated peninsula in the Marlborough Sounds is Queen Charlotte Wilderness Park. Originally a large sheep station the property is now dedicated to “the business of saving our environment” and the pastureland is being left to revert to native forest. This is a place where nature can send huge waves surging up the cliffs. But it can also be, and often is, a tranquil place. The only passing traffic is likely to be a pod of orcas on their way south for their summer holiday, or dolphins, leaping between worlds.
The cape is known for a shipwreck of Russian cruise liner the Mikhail Lermontov. It sunk in nearby Port Gore in February 1986. On the peninsula is also old unused gold mine.
